EXHIBITION

 

Ara is a composite of innocence, rebellion and trauma of childhood. My role as a visual artist and filmmaker is the survival and sustenance of self. The Ara mythology is my attempt to transform lived experience into everyday folklore. Ara: A New Face of the Old World is Sunara Begum’s first international solo exhibition using photography, film and installation. She is an artist of integrity who draws her influences from the natural world, figurative painting, religious iconography, mystical philosophies and the cultures in which she was raised. Combining cinematography and storytelling, Begum’s work explores the themes of identity, femininity and loss. The exhibition includes medium format photographs, text, an installation series entitled, Ara’s Dreams and two short films shot on 8mm and 16mm entitled Ara’s World and Ara’s Sojourn. Alongside the exhibition there is also an artist monograph entitled, The Legend of Ara as well as a programme of music and multi-media visual performances and workshops.

A solo kora performance by the composer and kora maestro, Tunde Jegede who specially composed music for Ara’s Dreams and Ara’s Sojourn with accompanying performance by singer and guitarist, Sona Jobarteh.

WORKSHOP


Exploring the key concepts that emerge in the exhibition using poetry, text and film, this workshop considers the links between sound and visuals in the 21st century using dance, music and imagery being part of a dying culture and the future of folk traditions. Inspired by tales of ancient culture, traditional forms of living and folk-traditions of Asia, Africa and South America, poetic dance explored through the medium of film. Explore poetry, text and film with visual artist and filmmaker, Sunara Begum.
