'Love the visuals, very powerful’
‘Completely in synch with the music’
‘The background visuals were actually at the foreground of the show’
‘A merging of light, reflection, colour and form’
The Ancient Futures production with commissioned visual artist Sunara Begum and her stunning 80-minutes of improvised video art backdrop for the Tunde Jegede Ensemble featuring Juldeh Camara and Sona Jobarteh. Composed from entirely original footage shot in over three continents, Sunara’s visual library is a palette of textures shot on 16mm, 8mm film as well as video and digital – her multi-media backdrop becomes a fourth instrument on stage.
Led by Tunde Jegede, Ancient Futures brings together ancient traditions with digital technology – exploring old traditions in a new light. The show features the extraordinary African violin player, Juldeh Camara, Sona Jobarteh, first female within the Griot tradition to play the Kora and imagery by the visual artist, Sunara Begum who combines music, narrative and iconic visual motifs in her work. The music of Ancient Futures is drawn from two worlds, that of the desert nomads and Malian Royal Court Music traditions, and the imagery used in this production will give a sense of these worlds both culturally and historically.
